  • Embrace Relaxation for Better Health: Relaxation Techniques Benefits

In today’s fast-paced world, stress has become a common part of life. Finding ways to relax is not just a luxury but a necessity for maintaining good health. Embracing relaxation can improve your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Understanding the Importance of Relaxation Relaxation is more than just taking a break; it is a vital process that helps your body and mind recover from stress. When you relax, your heart rate slows down, blood pressure decreases, and your muscles loosen. This physiological response reduces the harmful effects of chronic stress, which can lead to serious health problems such as heart disease, anxiety, and depression. For example, deep breathing exercises can activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which promotes a state of calm. Even a few minutes of focused breathing can lower cortisol levels, the hormone responsible for stress. This simple practice can be done anywhere, making it an accessible tool for anyone looking to improve their health. Deep breathing exercise in nature Deep breathing helps reduce stress and promotes relaxation. Relaxation Techniques Benefits for Physical and Mental Health The benefits of relaxation techniques extend beyond just feeling calm. They have a profound impact on both physical and mental health. Here are some key benefits: Improved Sleep Quality : Relaxation helps regulate your sleep cycle, making it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep. Better Focus and Concentration : Relaxation clears the mind, improving cognitive function and productivity. Incorporating relaxation into your daily life can be as simple as setting aside 10 minutes for meditation or taking a short walk in a quiet park. These small changes can lead to significant health improvements over time. Peaceful park bench for relaxation and meditation Spending time in nature supports relaxation and mental clarity. Popular Relaxation Techniques to Try Today There are many relaxation techniques available, each with unique benefits. Here are some popular methods you can try: Meditation : Focus your mind on a single point of reference, such as your breath or a mantra. This practice helps reduce stress and increase mindfulness. Progressive Muscle Relaxation : Tense and then slowly release each muscle group in your body. This technique helps relieve physical tension. Yoga : Combines physical postures, breathing exercises, and meditation to promote relaxation and flexibility. Guided Imagery : Visualize peaceful scenes or experiences to calm your mind. Tai Chi : A gentle form of martial arts that involves slow, flowing movements and deep breathing. To get started, choose one technique that resonates with you and practice it consistently. Over time, you will notice improvements in your overall health and well-being. How to Create a Relaxation Routine That Works Building a relaxation routine requires commitment and consistency. Here are some tips to help you create a routine that fits your lifestyle: Set a Specific Time : Dedicate a regular time each day for relaxation, such as morning or before bed. Create a Comfortable Space : Find a quiet, comfortable spot free from distractions. Start Small : Begin with 5-10 minutes and gradually increase the duration. Use Technology Wisely : Apps and online videos can guide you through relaxation exercises. Combine Techniques : Mix different methods like meditation and deep breathing for a more comprehensive approach. Remember, the goal is to make relaxation a habit, not a chore. By embracing relaxation techniques benefits, you can reduce stress, enhance your immune system, and improve your mental clarity. • Unlocking the Power of Lymph Drainage Massage for Cellulite Reduction and Weight Loss

Lymph drainage massage has gained attention as a natural way to support the body’s detoxification process, reduce cellulite, and aid in weight management. This gentle technique targets the lymphatic system, which plays a crucial role in removing waste and excess fluids from the body. Many people struggle with stubborn cellulite, water retention, and slow metabolism, and lymph drainage massage offers a promising approach to address these concerns. How the Lymphatic System Supports Your Body The lymphatic system is a network of vessels, nodes, and organs that helps maintain fluid balance and supports immune function. Unlike the circulatory system, it does not have a central pump like the heart. Instead, lymph moves through the body by muscle contractions and gentle pressure. When lymph flow slows or becomes blocked, toxins and fluids can accumulate, leading to swelling, puffiness, and the appearance of cellulite. Lymph drainage massage uses rhythmic strokes, cupping and pumping techniques to stimulate lymph flow and encourage the removal of waste products. This can help reduce water retention and improve skin texture by promoting better circulation and detoxification. Benefits of Lymph Drainage Massage for Cellulite Cellulite forms when fat deposits push through connective tissue beneath the skin, creating a dimpled or lumpy appearance. While cellulite is common and natural, many seek ways to reduce its visibility. Lymph drainage massage can support this goal by: Reducing fluid buildup : Excess fluid trapped in tissues can worsen cellulite’s appearance. Massage helps drain this fluid, smoothing the skin. Improving circulation : Better blood and lymph flow deliver nutrients and oxygen to skin cells, supporting repair and elasticity. Breaking down fat deposits : Gentle massage may help soften fat clusters and improve the texture of affected areas. Supporting collagen production : Stimulating the skin can encourage collagen growth, which strengthens connective tissue and reduces dimpling. A study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology found that regular lymphatic massage combined with healthy lifestyle changes led to noticeable improvements in cellulite appearance over several weeks. How Lymph Drainage Massage Helps with Water Retention Water retention, or edema, occurs when excess fluid accumulates in body tissues, causing swelling and discomfort. It can result from factors like poor circulation, hormonal changes, or a sedentary lifestyle. Lymph drainage massage encourages the movement of lymph fluid, which carries away excess water and waste. By promoting lymph flow, this massage can: Decrease swelling in areas like legs, ankles, and abdomen Relieve feelings of heaviness and tightness Support kidney and liver function by reducing toxin load Improve overall body balance and comfort People who experience seasonal or hormonal water retention often report relief after a series of lymph drainage sessions. Supporting Weight Loss with Lymph Drainage Massage While lymph drainage massage is not a direct weight loss method, it complements weight management efforts by enhancing the body’s natural detoxification and circulation. Here’s how it supports weight loss: Boosting metabolism : Improved lymph flow helps remove metabolic waste, which can support more efficient energy use. Reducing bloating : By clearing excess fluids, massage can reduce abdominal bloating, making weight loss efforts feel more effective. Encouraging relaxation : Stress reduction from massage lowers cortisol levels, which can influence fat storage. Enhancing exercise recovery : Faster removal of toxins and fluids helps muscles recover, supporting consistent physical activity. Incorporating lymph drainage massage into a balanced routine of healthy eating and regular exercise can improve results and promote a leaner, more toned appearance. One of our clients lost 13kg from end October to early in January. What to Expect During a Lymph Drainage Massage Session A typical session lasts 30 to 60 minutes and involves gentle, precise hand movements that follow the lymphatic pathways. The therapist uses light pressure, often starting near lymph nodes in the neck or underarms to stimulate flow, then moving to affected areas like thighs, glutes, abdomen, or arms. Depending on the blockages in the body, the treatment can feel soothing or a little painful around affected areas. Some people notice immediate reduction in swelling or a feeling of lightness afterward. For best results, multiple sessions over several weeks are recommended. Tips for Maximizing the Benefits of Lymph Drainage Massage To get the most from lymph drainage massage, consider these practical tips: Stay hydrated : Drinking plenty of water supports lymph flow and helps flush out toxins. Move regularly : Gentle exercise like walking or yoga encourages natural lymph circulation. Maintain a healthy diet : Foods rich in antioxidants, low in carbs and low in salt reduce inflammation and fluid retention. Wear loose and natural clothing : Tight clothes can restrict lymph flow and counteract massage benefits. Natural fibers like cotton and linen can also have benefits. Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol : These habits impair circulation and toxin removal. Consult a professional : Seek a certified lymphatic massage therapist for safe and effective treatment. Este is currently our Lymph Specialist at Namo Health. She has years of experience and her clients are so impressed with the results from her Lymph Drainage Treatments - she normally does a 30 or 45min session. Integrating Lymph Drainage Massage into Your Wellness Routine Adding lymph drainage massage to your self-care plan can enhance your body’s natural ability to detoxify, reduce cellulite, and support weight management. Consider scheduling sessions regularly, especially during times of increased fluid retention or after intense physical activity. Pair massage with other healthy habits like balanced nutrition, hydration, and movement for a holistic approach to wellness. Over time, you may notice smoother skin, less swelling, and improved energy. You can find a menu of our various treatments here: www.namohealth.co.za/treatments

  • Unleashing the Power of Cayenne Pepper: A Natural Boost for Your Health 🌶️

Hey there, health enthusiasts! If you're exploring natural ways to enhance your well-being, cayenne pepper might just be the spicy superstar you've been missing. At Namo, we're all about empowering you with holistic health insights, and today, we're diving into the incredible benefits of this fiery red spice. Drawing from the wisdom of natural health expert Barbara O'Neill, who champions cayenne as a "miracle herb" for its potent healing properties, we'll explore why it's worth adding to your routine. Let's break it down clearly and confidently – because when it comes to your health, knowledge is power! 💪 The Remarkable Benefits of Cayenne Pepper Barbara O'Neill often highlights cayenne pepper's role in supporting cardiovascular health, circulation, and overall vitality. Derived from the Capsicum annuum plant, this spice contains capsaicin, a compound that gives it that signature heat and packs a punch of health perks. Here's what makes it stand out: Heart Health Hero ❤️ : O'Neill teaches that cayenne can help equalize blood pressure and improve circulation by dilating blood vessels. She famously shares stories of it being used to stop heart attacks in emergencies – a bold claim backed by its ability to stimulate blood flow. Studies support this, showing capsaicin may reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering cholesterol levels. Pain Relief and Inflammation Buster 🔥 : As a natural analgesic, cayenne is praised for topical and internal use to ease arthritis, muscle pain, and even headaches. O'Neill recommends it for its anti-inflammatory effects, which can soothe digestive issues like ulcers (contrary to the myth that spicy foods worsen them). Metabolism and Digestion Booster ⚡ : It revs up your metabolism, aiding weight management, and stimulates digestive enzymes for better nutrient absorption. O'Neill notes its detoxifying properties, helping clear toxins from the body. Immune Support and More 🌟 : Rich in vitamins A, C, and E, cayenne strengthens immunity and may even fight off colds. O'Neill also touts it for wound healing and as a general tonic for energy. While these benefits are widely celebrated, it's worth noting alternative views: Some medical professionals caution that excessive cayenne might irritate the stomach in sensitive individuals, especially those with acid reflux. In rare cases, like allergies to nightshade plants, it could cause reactions. Always consult a professional before starting, particularly if you're pregnant or on medications – balance is key! 😊 Ways to Incorporate Cayenne: Powder, Tincture, or Capsule Flexibility is one of cayenne's best features. Choose based on your lifestyle: Powder Form 🌶️ : The most versatile – sprinkle it on meals for an instant kick. It's affordable and easy to find. Tincture 🧪 : A concentrated liquid extract, ideal for quick absorption. O'Neill suggests a few drops in water for fast-acting benefits, like during a circulatory emergency. It can work like a Disprin, but without the side effects. Capsule 💊 : Perfect for those who dislike the taste. Pop one daily for consistent dosing without the heat. No matter the form, start low (e.g., 1/4 teaspoon powder) to build tolerance and avoid digestive upset. Simple Recipes to Spice Up Your Daily Diet Ready to get practical? Here are two easy recipes inspired by O'Neill's emphasis on everyday integration. They're beginner-friendly and use cayenne powder for simplicity. Cayenne Lemon Detox Drink 🍋 (Morning Ritual): Mix 1 cup warm water, juice of half a lemon, 1/4 tsp cayenne powder, and a dash of honey. Stir and sip first thing – great for digestion and energy! You can also swop the pure cayenne pepper for Namo's Five Health Spice blend that contains Cayenne Pepper. Spicy Veggie Stir-Fry 🥦 : Sauté broccoli, bell peppers, and onions in olive oil or tallow. Add 1/2 tsp cayenne powder, garlic, and soy sauce. Serve over quinoa for a metabolism-boosting meal. These add flavor without overwhelming – experiment to suit your taste buds! Actionable Tips to Get Started Today Want to make cayenne a habit? Here's a quick bullet list of concrete steps: Start Small : Begin with 1/4 tsp in your morning tea or smoothie to test tolerance. Gradually increase to 1 tsp daily. Track Your Progress : Keep a journal noting energy levels or pain relief after a week – adjust as needed. Pair with Meals : Add to soups, salads, or dressings for seamless integration without extra effort. Source Quality : Opt for organic or non-irradiated cayenne from trusted suppliers to maximize benefits and purity. There you have it – cayenne pepper isn't just a spice; it's a natural ally for vibrant health, as Barbara O'Neill so passionately teaches. Ready to turn up the heat on your wellness journey? 🌟

These are the seeds you reach for when you want flavour that stands out. Radish Seeds : Tiny , but pack a spicy punch! Grows in 4–6 days. Beautiful reddish stems and loaded with antioxidants. Mustard Seeds :Another fiery favourite. Sharp, peppery flavour. Ready in 5–7 days. Stimulates digestion and metabolism. • Exploring Wellness Practices for a Balanced Lifestyle

In our fast-paced world, finding balance can often feel like an impossible task. We juggle work, family, and social commitments, leaving little time for ourselves. However, adopting wellness practices can help us create equilibrium in our lives. This blog post delves into various strategies for cultivating physical, mental, and emotional wellness. Understanding Wellness Practices Wellness practices encompass activities and habits that promote better health and well-being. These can range from physical exercises like yoga and running to mental exercises such as mindfulness and meditation. By incorporating these practices into our daily routines, we can significantly enhance our quality of life. According to the Global Wellness Institute, the global wellness economy was worth approximately $4.5 trillion in 2018, showcasing a growing trend towards health and wellness-focused living. This shift is driven by increased awareness of the benefits of healthy living and its impact on overall happiness and productivity. Physical Wellness Practices One of the pillars of a balanced lifestyle is physical wellness. Engaging in regular exercise and maintaining a healthy diet can help improve your mood, energy levels, and longevity. Exercise Regular physical activity can reduce the risk of chronic diseases, improve cardiovascular health, and enhance mental health. Consider incorporating these exercises into your routine: Walking or Jogging : Even a 30-minute walk can significantly boost your mood and mental clarity. Yoga : Besides providing physical benefits, yoga also promotes relaxation and stress relief. Strength Training : Building muscle not only improves metabolism but also strengthens bones. Make it a point to aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity each week. A peaceful outdoor yoga session in nature. Nutrition Pairing your exercise routine with a balanced diet is crucial. Focus on: Whole Foods : Opt for fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Nutrient-dense foods energize your body and improve overall health. Hydration : Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Staying hydrated fosters optimal physical and mental performance. Mindful Eating : Pay attention to your food choices and portion sizes. Mindful eating encourages you to savor meals and can help prevent overeating. Mental Wellness Practices Mental wellness is equally important for achieving a balanced lifestyle. Practices that cultivate mental clarity and resilience can pave the way for personal and professional success. Mindfulness and Meditation Mindfulness involves being present and fully engaged in the moment. Meditation practices can help reduce anxiety and improve focus. Here are a few techniques to consider: Guided Meditation : Use apps like Headspace or Calm for structured sessions that provide a calming experience. Deep Breathing : Take a few moments each day to focus on your breath. Inhale deeply through the nose, and exhale slowly through the mouth. This technique can lower stress levels significantly. An inviting meditation corner with soft lighting. Journaling Journaling is a fantastic way to process emotions and reflect on your thoughts. Dedicate time each day or week to write about your feelings, aspirations, and experiences. This practice can enhance self-awareness and emotional intelligence. According to a study published in the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology, expressive writing not only improves mental health but also helps in problem-solving and coping with stress. Emotional Wellness Practices Achieving emotional wellness involves understanding and managing your feelings effectively. It is essential not only for personal happiness but also for fostering healthy relationships. Social Connections Building and maintaining strong relationships is vital for emotional well-being. Surround yourself with supportive friends and family. Engage in social activities such as: Group Classes : Join classes or community groups that interest you. Connecting with others who share your passions can provide a sense of belonging. Volunteering : Helping others can enhance your mood and provide a greater sense of purpose. Gratitude Practices Focusing on positive aspects of life can provide emotional support. Keep a gratitude journal and write down three things you are thankful for each day. This practice has been linked to improved mental health, as noted in research published by the American Psychological Association. Gratitude Journals - available at Namo Integrating Wellness Into Your Daily Routine Balancing these wellness practices requires intentionality and consistency. Here are structured approaches to help you integrate them into your daily life: Create a Daily Wellness Plan Design a schedule that encompasses various aspects of wellness. Dedicate specific times each day or week for physical activity, mental exercises, and social engagements. This ensures that you are taking a holistic approach to your well-being. Set Achievable Goals Start with small, achievable goals. For example, if you're new to yoga, aim to practice once a week. Gradually increase the frequency as you become more comfortable. Setting achievable goals helps maintain motivation and provides a sense of accomplishment. Utilize Technology Apps can serve as excellent tools for tracking your wellness journey. Whether it's a fitness tracker for monitoring physical activity or a mindfulness app for meditation, leveraging technology can enhance your practice. Remember, the aim is to create a lifestyle that embodies wellness. You might want to explore retreats or treatments which provides an immersive experience in wellness practices. Maintaining Balance in a Busy World With all the demands on our time, maintaining a balanced lifestyle might seem daunting. However, implementing even small changes can lead to significant improvements. Strive for flexibility in your approach rather than perfection. Here are some additional tips: Listen to Your Body : Understand when it is time to push yourself and when to take a break. Your body will give you cues. Prioritize Self-Care : Make self-care a non-negotiable part of your routine. This can be as simple as enjoying a long bath or reading a book. Limit Screen Time : Reducing screen time can help you engage more with your surroundings and relationships. Set boundaries for technology use, especially during meals and family time. Incorporating wellness practices for a balanced lifestyle might take time but is undoubtedly worth the effort. Start small, stay consistent, and remember that your journey toward wellness is lifelong.

  • How Do I Know Which Magnesium to Take?

Magnesium: The Essential Mineral for Health and Well-Being Magnesium is a vital mineral involved in hundreds of processes in the human body. Imagine not having enough magnesium—many things can start to go wrong. It plays a central role in muscle and nerve function, energy production, blood sugar regulation, bone health, and even mood stabilization. Despite its importance, magnesium deficiency is surprisingly common. This can result from modern diets, high stress levels, and soil depletion. Understanding Different Types of Magnesium When it comes to supplementation, not all magnesium forms are equal. Different types are absorbed and utilized by the body in various ways. Therefore, choosing the right form is crucial for addressing your specific health needs. Below, we explore some of the most popular types of magnesium and what each form is best suited for. Magnesium Glycinate: For Sleep, Cramps, and Relaxation Magnesium glycinate is magnesium bound to glycine, an amino acid known for its calming effects. This form is well-absorbed and gentle on the digestive system. Best for: Muscle cramps, especially at night Supporting deep, restful sleep Easing anxiety and promoting a calm mood General magnesium replenishment with minimal digestive side effects If you're feeling tense, having trouble sleeping, or experiencing muscle twitches or cramps, magnesium glycinate is often the best go-to. Its soothing effects make it a favorite for evening use. Magnesium Citrate: For Muscle Cramps and Digestive Support Magnesium citrate is a highly bioavailable form, meaning it's easily absorbed by the body. It's often used to relieve constipation as it draws water into the intestines, encouraging bowel movements. Best for: Mild to moderate constipation Occasional bloating or sluggish digestion Muscle cramps Individuals who desire both digestive benefits and magnesium support If you're dealing with both cramps and a slow digestive system, magnesium citrate is an ideal option. It's also popular for magnesium replenishment because of its balance of absorption and effectiveness. Magnesium Oxide: For Occasional Laxative Support Magnesium oxide contains a high percentage of elemental magnesium but is less bioavailable than other forms. This means your body doesn’t absorb it as well. However, it can be effective in larger doses as a natural laxative. Best for: Occasional constipation Short-term digestive cleansing Budget-conscious users looking for an affordable laxative While it may not be the best choice for correcting magnesium deficiency due to low absorption, magnesium oxide is commonly used when someone needs help with digestion. Just be cautious with the dose to avoid diarrhea. Magnesium Threonate: For Brain Health and Cognitive Support Magnesium threonate is one of the newer and more specialized forms. It can cross the blood-brain barrier, directly increasing magnesium levels in the brain. Best for: Cognitive performance Brain fog and memory support Enhancing mental clarity and focus Long-term brain health and aging support While this type of magnesium is more expensive, it may be worth the investment. It's particularly beneficial if you're looking to support brain function, especially if you struggle with forgetfulness or mental fatigue. Magnesium Taurate: For Heart and Cardiovascular Support Magnesium taurate combines magnesium with taurine, an amino acid known for supporting heart and blood vessel function. This combination can be particularly calming and is often used to support a healthy cardiovascular system. Best for: Supporting healthy blood pressure Heart palpitations or irregular heartbeat Individuals with cardiovascular concerns who also need magnesium Though less commonly found in standard supplements, magnesium taurate is a smart option for those seeking to nourish both heart and nervous system health. Choosing the right magnesium type can make all the difference in how effective it is for your specific needs. Whether you're looking to sleep better, relieve cramps, improve digestion, or support your heart or brain, there's a magnesium type that fits. As always, it's essential to consult with a healthcare provider or nutritionist before starting any supplement. This is especially important if you're taking medication or have underlying health conditions. Your body will thank you for making the right magnesium match. Feel free to contact our product advisors at Namo Health Shop in Stilbaai. They can help you choose the best option—we might even find you a combo that's the best of both worlds.

  • Berberine: A Powerful Natural Supplement for Metabolic Health

In the world of natural health supplements, berberine  stands out as a potent and well-researched compound. Derived from several plants, including Berberis , this alkaloid has been used in traditional medicine for centuries. Modern science, however, has recently spotlighted its remarkable effectiveness in managing several health conditions, particularly those linked to metabolic syndrome . This cluster of conditions, often driven by poor diet and lifestyle, includes diabetes , elevated LDL cholesterol , hypertension , fatty liver , and excess body fat . Berberine’s therapeutic potential offers a promising natural alternative to pharmaceuticals with fewer side effects. Metabolic syndrome can severely affect quality of life. It increases the risk of conditions such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. Symptoms can range from low energy , poor sleep , and digestive issues  like constipation  or IBS , to more serious concerns like sexual dysfunction , neuropathic pain , and even depression  or anxiety . The side effects from the pharmaceutical treatments for these conditions, such as statins and hypoglycemic drugs, can also bring additional discomfort like muscle pain, digestive issues, and sleep disturbances. That’s where berberine comes in: research has shown that this natural compound can address multiple aspects of metabolic syndrome without the common side effects of traditional drugs. A groundbreaking 2015 study  compared the effects of berberine to standard hypoglycemic drugs like metformin  in individuals with type 2 diabetes. Amazingly, berberine was found to be as effective as metformin  at reducing and managing blood sugar levels. This is significant, as controlling blood glucose is a critical factor in preventing the long-term complications of diabetes, such as nerve damage, vision problems, and cardiovascular disease. Unlike metformin, which may cause gastrointestinal distress for some patients, berberine offers a gentler alternative while achieving similar results in controlling hyperglycemia . In addition to its impact on blood sugar, berberine has shown impressive results in improving cholesterol levels. Another study revealed that berberine was more effective than standard oral lipid-lowering drugs (statins)  in reducing total cholesterol  and LDL (bad) cholesterol , while simultaneously increasing HDL (good) cholesterol . Statins, although widely prescribed, often cause side effects like muscle pain and liver damage. Berberine not only delivers better cholesterol regulation but does so with fewer adverse effects. This makes it an ideal choice for those with hyperlipidemia , seeking a natural route to improve their heart health. Beyond blood sugar and cholesterol, berberine’s influence extends to several other areas of health, making it a valuable tool for managing metabolic syndrome  and improving overall wellness. Here’s a breakdown of its key benefits: Blood Pressure : Berberine has been shown to improve hypertension , helping to lower blood pressure levels naturally. High blood pressure, if left untreated, can lead to heart disease, stroke, and kidney problems. Liver Function : For individuals with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) , berberine has demonstrated improvements in liver health. It helps reduce fat accumulation in the liver, which is vital for overall metabolic balance. Inflammation : Berberine has anti-inflammatory  properties, which play a critical role in reducing the chronic inflammation often associated with metabolic syndrome. Body Fat Composition : Research has shown that berberine can help reduce body fat, particularly visceral fat. This type of fat surrounds internal organs and is linked to a higher risk of metabolic diseases. By improving body fat composition , berberine supports healthy weight management. For those looking to manage conditions such as diabetes , high cholesterol , hypertension , fatty liver , or simply improve body fat composition , berberine offers an impressive, natural alternative to pharmaceutical drugs. Its ability to positively affect hyperglycemia , hyperlipidemia , inflammation , and liver function  makes it a powerful ally in maintaining metabolic health. Incorporating berberine into your health routine could be a game-changer for your energy levels, sleep quality, and overall well-being, all while reducing your reliance on medications that come with difficult side effects. Always consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new supplement regimen, but for many, berberine may be the natural solution they’ve been seeking.

  • Could You Be Gluten Intolerant?

In recent years, gluten intolerance has gained recognition as a common health concern. If you've been experiencing persistent digestive issues or unexplained symptoms, it might be worth exploring whether gluten is the culprit. In this blog post, we'll delve into the signs of gluten intolerance, its effects on the body, and explore alternatives that can make a significant difference in your overall well-being. Signs of Gluten Intolerance: Gluten intolerance can manifest in various ways, and its symptoms often extend beyond digestive discomfort. Look out for signs such as bloating, abdominal pain, fatigue, joint pain, headaches, and skin issues like eczema. Digestive problems like diarrhea or constipation are also common indicators. The Impact of Gluten on the Body: In individuals sensitive to gluten, the consumption of this protein found in wheat, barley, and rye can trigger an immune response. This reaction can lead to inflammation and damage to the lining of the small intestine, hindering nutrient absorption. Even in those without gluten sensitivity, excessive gluten consumption can sometimes lead to digestive discomfort. Benefits of Digestive Enzymes: For those with gluten intolerance, incorporating digestive enzymes into their routine can be beneficial. These enzymes aid in the breakdown of gluten and other complex proteins, reducing the strain on the digestive system. However, it's crucial to note that digestive enzymes are not a cure-all; they should be used in conjunction with a gluten-free diet. Gluten-Free Alternatives: Fortunately, there are plenty of gluten-free alternatives available, allowing you to enjoy a diverse and delicious diet. Almond flour, rice flour, tapioca flour, and other gluten-free flours can replace traditional wheat flour in many recipes. These alternatives not only cater to those with gluten intolerance but also offer nutritional benefits, such as added protein and healthy fats. Easy Gluten-Free Mug Bread Recipe: Here's a quick and simple recipe for a gluten-free mug bread: Ingredients: 4 tbsp almond flour 1 tbsp coconut flour 1/4 tsp baking powder 1 egg 2 tbsp milk of choice Salt to taste Instructions: In a mug, combine almond flour, coconut flour, baking powder, and a pinch of salt. Add the egg and milk, stirring until well combined. Microwave on high for 2-3 minutes or until the bread rises and sets. Allow it to cool for a minute, slice, and enjoy your gluten-free mug bread! • Unveiling the Power of B Vitamins

Today we embark on a journey through the world of B vitamins—a group of essential nutrients that play a crucial role in maintaining our health and well-being. We'll dive into the benefits of each B vitamin, explore why a B complex might be your go-to, and discuss the significance of incorporating them as supplements in our daily lives. 1.    B1 (Thiamine): ·         Benefits: Vital for energy metabolism, nerve function, and maintaining a healthy cardiovascular system. Found in whole grains, beans, and nuts. 2.    B2 (Riboflavin): ·         Benefits: Essential for energy production, skin health, and vision. Present in dairy products, lean meats, and green leafy vegetables. 3.    B3 (Niacin): ·         Benefits: Supports heart health, cleaning cholesterol from the veins, supports the nervous system and heals nerve endings, improves circulation (especially good for diabetes), aids in digestion, and helps maintain healthy skin. Found in meat, fish, and whole grains. 4.    B5 (Pantothenic Acid): ·         Benefits: Essential for synthesizing and metabolizing fats, proteins, and carbohydrates, helps for restless legs and hormone production. Abundant in meat, avocados, and legumes. 5.    B6 (Pyridoxine): ·         Benefits: Important for brain development, immune function, supports PMS and irritability and plays a large role in the synthesis of neurotransmitters. Found in poultry, fish, and bananas. 6.    B7 (Biotin): ·         Benefits: Crucial for healthy skin, hair, and nails, and aids in the metabolism of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates, and also works for energy production. Present in nuts, eggs, and sweet potatoes. 7.    B9 (Folate/Folic Acid): ·         Benefits: Vital for DNA synthesis, red blood cell formation, and fetal development during pregnancy - which is why it's always recommended as a pre-natal supplement and during pregnancy. Abundant in leafy greens, legumes, and citrus fruits. 8.    B12 (Cobalamin): ·         Benefits: Essential for nerve function, memory & concentration, DNA synthesis, and the production of red blood cells. Found in animal products like meat, fish, and dairy. While individual B vitamins offer specific benefits, a B complex combines all eight, providing comprehensive support for energy production, metabolism, and overall well-being. The synergistic effect of the B complex ensures that your body receives the full spectrum of B vitamins, addressing a wide array of health needs. In an ideal world, we'd obtain all our nutrients from a perfectly balanced diet. However, the realities of modern life often lead to nutritional gaps. B vitamins play a pivotal role in converting food into energy, supporting mental clarity, and aiding in the maintenance of a healthy nervous system. Incorporating them as supplements can help bridge nutritional deficiencies. For those following a vegan lifestyle, obtaining sufficient B vitamins can be challenging. B12, in particular, is primarily found in animal products. Vegans should consider B12 supplementation to prevent deficiencies that can lead to fatigue, anemia, and neurological issues. When choosing B vitamin supplements, it's crucial to consider the form. Active forms, such as methylcobalamin (B12) and pyridoxal-5-phosphate (B6), are readily absorbed and utilized by the body, ensuring optimal effectiveness. Opting for active forms enhances bioavailability, maximizing the benefits of supplementation. Natural sources of B vitamins, derived from whole foods, are often preferred for their bioavailability and lack of potential side effects. Synthetic forms, while often effective, may not offer the same level of nutrient co-factors found in natural sources. Bioavailability is key when it comes to nutrient absorption. Choosing forms of B vitamins that the body can readily absorb ensures that you receive the maximum benefits. This consideration is especially vital for individuals with digestive issues or compromised nutrient absorption. One interesting side effect of B vitamin supplementation is the yellow tint it can give to urine. This is completely normal and harmless, indicating that your body is efficiently excreting excess B vitamins it doesn't need. As you incorporate B vitamins into your routine, you can expect increased energy levels, improved mood and cognitive function, better stress management, and enhanced overall well-being. These vitamins are the unsung heroes working behind the scenes to keep our bodies functioning at their best. In conclusion, B vitamins are a cornerstone of optimal health. Whether obtained through a well-balanced diet or supplemented for additional support, they play an indispensable role in maintaining our physical and mental vitality. As we navigate the complexities of modern living, let B vitamins be our allies in the pursuit of a healthier and more vibrant life.

  • Finding Serenity Within: A Journey Through Happy Hormones and Anxiety Relief

In the hustle and bustle of modern life, anxiety has become an unwelcome companion for many. The persistent worry, the racing thoughts, the tightness in the chest—it's a challenging journey that countless individuals navigate daily. But what if we could embark on a different kind of journey, one that leads us to the calming shores of happy hormones and natural remedies? Join me as we explore the intricate dance of serotonin, dopamine, endorphins, and oxytocin, and how they can become our allies in the battle against anxiety. Imagine your brain as a bustling metropolis, with neurotransmitters as messengers, weaving through the bustling streets of your neural pathways. Serotonin, the mood stabilizer; dopamine, the reward seeker; endorphins, the pain relievers; and oxytocin, the love hormone—all playing distinct roles in our emotional landscape. Serotonin, often called the "feel-good" neurotransmitter, is our mood stabilizer. It promotes feelings of well-being and happiness. Activities like exercise, exposure to sunlight, and a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids can boost serotonin levels. Dopamine, the reward neurotransmitter, motivates us to achieve goals. Engaging in pleasurable activities, setting and achieving goals, breaking personal records and practicing mindfulness can stimulate dopamine release. Remember the last thing you ticked something off on your to do list, that feeling right there, that's Dopamine at it's best. Endorphins, the body's natural painkillers, are released during exercise and pleasurable experiences. Laughter, meditation, and even spicy foods can trigger the release of endorphins. Oxytocin, often associated with bonding and social connection, is released through touch, hugs, and positive social interactions. Building strong, supportive relationships and practicing acts of kindness can enhance oxytocin levels. In the realm of anxiety, stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline often take center stage. The constant influx of stress can disrupt the delicate balance of our happy hormones, leading to an overwhelming sense of unease. Cortisol, known as the stress hormone, and adrenaline, the fight-or-flight messenger, surge during times of stress. Chronic anxiety can lead to an imbalance, hindering the body's ability to regulate these hormones. Anxiety announces its presence through a variety of symptoms—racing thoughts, restlessness, heart palpitations, feeling of being overwhelmed, muscle tension, irritability, and even physical symptoms like headaches and stomachaches. It's a pervasive force that demands attention, but we have the power to counter its effects. Begin your journey of healing by incorporating small lifestyle changes. Exercise regularly, expose yourself to natural sunlight, practice mindfulness through meditation or yoga, and maintain a balanced diet with omega-3 fatty acids. Delve into the world of supplements known for their calming effects on the brain. GABA (Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid): Acts as a neurotransmitter inhibitor, preventing the brain from over-firing and promotes relaxation. Valerian: Renowned for its calming effects, particularly useful for promoting sleep and reducing stress. Rhodiola and Ashwagandha: Adaptogenic herbs that help the body cope with stress and promote overall well-being. Mucuna: Contains L-DOPA, a precursor to dopamine, lifting mood and reducing stress. Passion Flower: Known for its calming properties, particularly beneficial for overthinking and racing thoughts. Tryptophan: An amino acid that supports serotonin production, contributing to improved mood and sleep. As we navigate the intricate pathways of our neurochemistry, we find that the journey towards anxiety relief is multifaceted. By nurturing our happy hormones and understanding the delicate balance of neurotransmitters, we can embark on a transformative journey toward serenity. If you're seeking guidance on this journey, explore the options available at Namo Health Shop. With a diverse range of supplements, we offer a holistic approach to well-being. Remember, the path to tranquility may be winding, but with each step, you're cultivating a profound connection with your inner harmony.

  • The Dangers of Conventional Sunscreen

Summer is here and the South African sun is shining brightly, many of us reach for our trusty sunscreen to protect our skin from harmful UV rays. However, have you ever considered the potential dangers lurking in conventional sunscreens? From cancer risks to environmental impact, it's time to explore why opting for a natural sunscreen is not just a choice for personal health but also a commitment to the well-being of our oceans. Skin, the Gateway to Absorption: Our skin, the largest organ of the body, plays a crucial role in protecting us from external threats. However, it's essential to recognize that the skin is also highly absorbable, allowing substances to penetrate and enter the bloodstream. Conventional sunscreens often contain a cocktail of synthetic chemicals, and when applied to the skin, these chemicals can be absorbed, potentially leading to adverse health effects over time. Cancer Risks Associated with Conventional Sunscreens: Several studies have raised concerns about the potential carcinogenic effects of certain ingredients commonly found in conventional sunscreens. Chemical filters such as oxybenzone and octinoxate, which absorb UV rays, have been linked to hormone disruption and an increased risk of skin cancer. As we prioritize sun protection, it's crucial to choose products that shield us without compromising our long-term health. The Environmental Impact: Ocean-Friendly vs. Non-Ocean-Friendly: Conventional sunscreens not only pose risks to human health but also contribute to environmental degradation, especially when we swim in the ocean. Oxybenzone and octinoxate, prevalent in many commercial sunscreens, have been identified as major culprits causing coral bleaching and negatively impacting marine ecosystems. Opting for an ocean-friendly sunscreen, free from harmful chemicals, is not only a responsible choice for personal health but also a step towards preserving our precious marine life. Natural Sunscreen: A Safer Alternative: Natural sunscreens offer a safe and effective alternative, relying on mineral-based ingredients such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to create a physical barrier against UV rays. Check that it's non-nano minerals so that the titanium lies on the skin and doesn't absorb into the skin. These ingredients are gentle on the skin, reducing the risk of irritation and allergic reactions commonly associated with chemical filters. The Rise of Eco-Conscious Choices: As consumers become more aware of the environmental consequences of their choices, the demand for eco-friendly products is on the rise. Many natural sunscreens are now formulated with biodegradable ingredients, ensuring that they break down harmlessly without leaving a lasting impact on the environment. When it comes to sun protection, it's crucial to weigh the potential dangers of conventional sunscreens against the benefits of natural alternatives. By choosing a natural sunscreen, not only do you safeguard your health, but you also contribute to the preservation of our oceans and marine life. As we embrace the beauty of the South African sun, let's do so responsibly, making choices that benefit both ourselves and the environment. Pop in at Namo Health Shop if you're in Stilbaai so that we can show you the variety of natural sunscreens that we stock, including Simply Bee, Back2Nature, Skin Creamery, All Good, Oh Lief and Lelive.

  • Unlocking the Power of Regular Massage

In our fast-paced modern lives, finding balance and maintaining our well-being is crucial. With the increasing awareness of holistic health practices, regular massage has emerged as an essential tool for achieving natural health and wellness. Beyond relaxation and stress relief, massage therapy offers a wide range of benefits that address both physical and mental well-being. In this blog post, we will explore the transformative power of regular massage and delve into its various aspects, including lymph drainage, pressure points, alignment work, and the importance of addressing inflammation, which is often referred to as the new disease of the century. Lymph Drainage: Unlocking the Body's Natural Detoxification System The lymphatic system plays a vital role in removing toxins and waste from our bodies. Regular massage techniques, such as lymphatic drainage, can stimulate lymph flow and enhance the body's natural detoxification process. By promoting lymphatic circulation, massage helps eliminate harmful substances, reduce water retention, and boost the immune system, ultimately contributing to improved overall health. The Power of Pressure Points: Unlocking the Body's Vital Energy Massage therapists are well-versed in the art of targeting specific pressure points throughout the body to alleviate pain, reduce tension, and restore balance. These pressure points correspond to various organs and systems, and when stimulated, they can release blocked energy, promote relaxation, and enhance the body's natural healing mechanisms. By incorporating pressure point therapy into regular massage sessions, individuals can experience enhanced vitality, reduced stress, and improved overall well-being. Alignment Work: Restoring Balance and Correcting Postural Imbalances Our daily routines often subject our bodies to repetitive movements and poor posture, leading to imbalances and discomfort. Regular massage therapy can address these issues by focusing on alignment work. Skilled massage therapists can identify misalignments, release tension in affected muscles, and restore proper skeletal alignment. This not only helps alleviate pain and discomfort but also improves overall posture and prevents future injuries. Addressing Inflammation: The New Disease of the Century Inflammation has been identified as a root cause of numerous chronic health conditions. From arthritis to cardiovascular diseases, the detrimental effects of unchecked inflammation are far-reaching. Regular massage can provide significant relief by reducing inflammation throughout the body. The targeted pressure and manipulations involved in massage stimulate blood flow, improve lymphatic circulation, and reduce the production of inflammatory markers. By managing inflammation, individuals can safeguard their long-term health and well-being. Regular Massage: Routine Maintenance for the Body Just as we service our cars to ensure optimal performance, our bodies also require regular maintenance. Living with persistent muscle spasms or chronic tension is akin to driving with a handbrake up – it hinders our ability to move freely and experience life to the fullest. Regular massage sessions act as an investment in our physical and mental health, allowing us to release tension, promote relaxation, and optimize our body's functionality. Circulation Boost in Winter: Nurturing the Body During Cold Months Winter often brings colder temperatures, decreased physical activity, and a greater likelihood of stiffness and reduced circulation. Regular massage during this season is particularly beneficial as it helps improve blood flow, combat cold-induced muscle tension, and promote warmth and comfort. By prioritizing regular massage sessions, individuals can maintain their well-being throughout the year, regardless of the external conditions. Regular massage is a potent tool for nurturing our natural health and wellness. By incorporating techniques such as lymph drainage, pressure point stimulation, alignment work, and addressing inflammation, individuals can experience a multitude of benefits. Just as we care for our cars, it is essential to prioritize regular body maintenance to optimize our well-being, release tension, and enhance our quality of life. • Man or Machine

Last night I watched a Youtube video by Jordon Peterson on Chat GPT. My dad asked me, just before pressing play, do you know what Chat GPT is, and I said: “No”. Basically it’s Artificial Intelligence. Like the stuff we see in the movies – except this is real and it’s happening in real-time. This AI technology is so smart that you can ask it to write you a whole essay on a topic. Now you might think oh but this is just like Wikipedia but it’s not… like you can say exactly what you want it to say. Like the theme and the length and the style. It’s insane. You can even ask it to write a marketing pice for you and there’s other AI technologies that it will even look like a human that’s recorded talking about your content. I was frankly quite shocked by this. Shocked and amazed. I was thinking to myself. I wonder now me, that loves to write and that dreams of bringing out a book one day if I’d have to put on the cover: “Written by my own brain” to state that I actually wrote it and didn’t just use AI technology to say: “write me a book about the benefits of herbs for the nervous system and how we can include herbs into our everyday lives. If I did that I would probably have a book ready to publish within one or two minutes. I hear an essay takes about three seconds to write. How why am I talking about AI on a health blog… we were chatting about this video last night. If everything is going electronic and becoming so robotic, people are going to crave the personal touch. In the blink of an eye our lives are going to be entwined with AI technology and frankly, it scares me a bit. Imagine walking into a health shop and there’s a human look-alike robot asking you what she can help you with and she knows every herb on the planet and every drug and every contraindication and every warning and every symptom… It’s unthinkable the amount of knowledge that a computer like that can hold. I wonder how long it will take before more and more jobs could be replaced with these AI machines. Probably not too quickly in a third world country like South Africa but still. Imagine the lost jobs – in a time where jobs are already so hard to come by. I’m trying to imagine this AI technology in each division of our business – making juice to mixing our bath salt to presenting an exercise class and giving advice on the products… the possibilities are endless! There’s also thousands of machines out there already that does massage in some way of the other but I think people will still crave human interaction if they advance AI to being a robot that can offer massages. While having a massage, having someone to listen to your heartache and actually have empathy for your situation. That hands-on touch and someone that gives you the confidence that the body can heal itself. Even in the health shop – coming in, seeing a familiar face, getting greeted with a smile and getting advise from someone that really cares and wants you to feel better. We’re not always perfect – we’ve have off days and we make mistakes and our brain’s sometimes blank on the different between Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide (NAD) and N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) – that last one happened today actually. But I think sometimes that within the imperfect there’s actually a lot of good stuff. I love when I really connect with a client and they’ve got a few health complaints and we chat it out and find that perfect combo of herbs for them to take. The cherry on the cake is when they come back a few days later and they that they’re feeling so much better since taking those products. I think that’s the real reward of working in my industry. I love that people are praising our business more than us at this point. It feels like a haven. A special place where people can come to just relax and find answers. They come to Namo to find quality of life. They say health is the new wealth. Another saying that I quite enjoy is that the healthy man has a million wishes but an unhealthy man has but one – to be healthy again. I’m not sure what the future holds but I know we’ll still be here – helping people be healthier!

  • The ingredient they don't tell you about...

I got some inspiration to start writing again and to do a few videos again for educational and marketing purposes. The first idea that jumped into my mind actually came to me while I was in the shower. I'm quite rushed with my skin care routine so most of it happens in the shower. Cleansing my face, exfoliating - it all happens in there. I got gifted a facial wash/scrub, cool kinda 2-in-1, even better for my skin care routine. Now it's not the natural stuff I normally use but I'm not going to look a gift horse in the mouth, so I used it. Only to get the shock of my life. It came to me like a light bulb moment. There's plastic in there... Now I'm not talking about the packaging tube. I mean like actual plastic, in the product. The cleanser contains these tiny little blue grains. Looks almost like sand grains. That's obviously what gives the scrubbing effect to help for the blackheads and impurity removal. Cool right?! NO! The previous wash/scrub combo I used also has these little grains in but they were actually super finely ground apricot kernels. These were totally natural and obviously biodegradable. These blue micro plastics on the other hand are not biodegradable and will end up in the ocean via my shower drain. This shook me to my core. Just last week a watched an episode of Down to Earth (by Zac Efron) about how micro-plastics are killing the coral reefs. And here I was contributing to those micro-plastics in the ocean. They could actually end up in the fish I eat - let that sink in for a moment. I don't like writing about doom and gloom kind of things. I like to keep things positive but I just thought people should know this before making a purchase. I don't think it's just facial scrubs either... there are plenty household and beauty products with these micro-plastics in. Please be aware of these. As long as you're aware - you'll start seeing them everywhere and hopefully be able to give them a miss when you find them on the shelves. The plastic packaging can at least be discarded of properly or recycled but the moment you use the products, it's gone down the drain and who knows where it will end up!? If you're looking for a scrub - we've got a few natural ones available in store. They have a variety of different active ingredients like enzymes, sugar, bamboo fibers, apricot kernel granules or even oats. It's also super fun to mix your own masks or scrubs to use on our next home-spa-day or girls night. Ask one of our girls to assist you with to find the ingredients of your favourite recipe. I found the following two recipes on Pinterest. Feel free to share any winning recipes in the comments. Activated Charcoal Detox Mask Recipe © Rebecca D. Dillon Ingredients: These are the ingredients you need to make this activated charcoal facial mask recipe for acne prone skin: 2.5 oz. kaolin (white cosmetic) clay .15 oz. sea salt, fine ground .1 oz. pink Himalayan (mineral) salt .1 oz. hardwood activated charcoal powder .05 oz. calendula flower powder How to Make Activated Charcoal Face Mask Here is how to make an activated charcoal face mask to fight acne and reduce pore size: Using a digital scale, weigh out all the ingredients and combine in a glass bowl. Mix well to combine. Pour the activated charcoal detox mask into one 8 oz. jar. I specifically used a clear plastic 8 oz. low profile jar and a 200 mL cosmetic style jar from Infinity Jars for this project. (My activated charcoal detox mask recipe fills one 8 oz. container. To fill additional jars, double the recipe as needed.) Alternately, you can fill two 4 oz. jars with this recipe. I also like the 4 oz. glass salve jars for this recipe. How to Use an Acne Face Mask To use your activated charcoal detox mask, simply combine 1 Tablespoon of the mask with 1/2 Tablespoon of water in your hand to form a paste. Then massage the mask onto your skin in a circular motion. Rinse the mask off with warm water once it has dried. Alternately, rather than mixing your mask with water, you can also mix your mask with aloe vera juice, plain Greek yogurt or rosehip seed oil to suit your skin’s individual needs. Detox Face Mask Tips and Substitutions For more sensitive skin, reduce the amount of salt to no more than .2 oz. total. Additionally, if you have calendula petals, you can simply run them through a coffee grinder to create a powder. • What does Namo stand for?

Over the years Namo has evolved into something that was a simple dream 20 years ago. A merger of many minds that collaborated and inspired each other over time. If we look back and ask who decided that and who did this... I can't really say... it just came to be and today we have this amazing space that feels so wonderful to be in and to be a part of. I often tell visitors that it feels like a holiday working at Namo! The Health Shop is my baby and she's grown into something that litteraly takes my breath away. I can thank so many people but a special thanks to my parents and my husband for all the support and input. So many clients over the years - each leaving a little spec of themselves behind, shaping and forming Namo into what it is today. Hehe this is starting to sound like a speech - probably one I could have easily given at our Grande Opening in September when we re-launched our store. But let me get to what this blog is actually all about... What does Namo stand for? We get asked this question often... Back when Namo started I can remember that it stood for Natural Motion. In Korean, namo means tree which is just a happy coincidence! When I Googled Namo, I discovered that it also means 'to pay homage to' in Sanskrit - this means to pay deep respect to someone. This is so special to me because we have such a deep respect for nature and the understanding that everything comes from nature. "Nurture from nature", as Joanna Gains would say. My dad always used to ask, "Are you adding value?". We have such a deep appreciation and gratitude for our blessings, our community, our team and our success and I truly feel we're able to add to much value to peoples lives. But to come to the point - Na-mo, for us, stands for Natural Movement. Now this can mean soooo many things. It's literal natural movement like exercise and dance - which is so good for us. That's why we decided to even re-build the Exercise Studio at Namo - it's so important to keep moving in life (physically and symbolically). There always used to be a sign board outside Coffee and Cream (the then-coffee shop next to Namo) and it read: Life is like riding a bicycle, in order to keep your balance, you have to keep moving. This is so true, in order to move forward, you have to keep peddling. Like Dory in Finding Nemo: Just keep swimming, just keep swimming, just keep swimming! From training for a marathon to engaging all your face muscles to give the brightest smile ever - it's our body's natural movement. The treatments we do at Namo was the concept that Namo was built on in 2001 - before there was even talk of an Exercise Studio or Health Shop. When we do the Namo Treatment, we try to create as much movement in the body as possible. The muscles, nerves and the spine - all working together to create perfect alignment and great posture - to increase your quality of life! The idea of 'the body can heal itself' is one we strongly believe in - when there's movement in the body, this natural movement towards health can happen much easier. We're just there to assist this natural movement. Natural Movement also refers to the 'green movement' of the world right now - everyone is becoming more health conscious, more eco conscious and more green conscious. Like back in the day people didn't even think their plastic toothbrush was a problem, and yet now we use bamboo toothbrushes (in an attempt to save the world, one toothbrush at a time). Sometimes it feels like a slow movement but the movement is there - that's for sure. I think in our industry we see it a lot more than in other businesses and it makes my heart so happy to be a first-row witness of this movement. I'm so excited to see where the natural movement of the world will lead Namo in the years to come! I hope to see each and every visitor at Namo leave a little happier and healthier than when they came in.

  • Lack of movement

Let me start by saying... I love being stiff! Haha I know that sounds weird but what I mean is that I love that feeling of your muscles being sore after a workout. For me it feels like accomplishment.. like then I know my muscles really worked! I crave that feeling if I haven't felt it in a while. I train about 5 times a week for an hour but it's not all heavy workouts. Now and then after a really good Pilates class I'll feel certain muscles be nice and stiff.. or the next day at least. Then I know it's those muscles we haven't worked in a while. I can visibly see how my muscles have toned from doing Pilates.. it's really cool. The other day I played squash for the first time and I could barely walk the next day.. it was awesome! In today's fast paced lifestyle we don't move enough. I know everyone's jobs are different and while some are very active, most I can think of off the top of my head is very low mobility kind of jobs. Desk work has become a problem.. we're not moving anymore. People are coming up with ways to change that by swopping your chair for a bouncy ball or switching entirely to a standing desk. I even saw a treadmill desk on Facebook the other day where you work and walk at the same time. The miles this lady got was amazing. We're not even walking enough.. we get in our cars, drive to work, start working, get in our cars and drive home. How much walking have you actually done? I always thought they were just being funny when they said: Take the stairs instead of the elevator but like now I really wanna take thr stairs! It's become too easy not to move. Remember those days where you actually had to get up to change the channel on the TV? Or do you remember thr days of writing letters instead of emails? Those letters had to actually be taken to the post office. Back in the day lots of people used to grow their own food. They had big gardens by their property and they used to grow fruit, herbs and vegetables, sometimes even grains and legumes. Now it seems I get jealous when I hear about someone's veggie garden. Lately it's a lot easier to just go buy groceries at the shops. I remember a few months ago my mom's veggie garden was overgrown with tomatoes. And I mean overgrown..  in like 15min I managed to harvest like 2kg of cherry tomatoes. I remember this clearly because having to climb and step and bend and reach and stretch to get to those perfectly red tomatoes had my legs and bums feeling like they had the workout of a lifetime the next day. I was so stiff and I was stil thinking but what did we do in class that targeted my glutes? And then it hit me.. it was the tomato picking. Such a simple exercise that's done daily for many, left my body feeling like that. I was shocked. It just showed me that I really don't move enough. Simple things but like squating to open the garage door instead of using a remote. You get that squat, or you don't. That how our routines have evolved to include less and less movement. I'm not saying that we should throw away our TV remotes and stop using technology. I'm just saying that we should be aware of this trend and try to make up for lost movement in other ways. Oh yes.. another story.. more recent.. because my shoulders and traps are still sore. We're busy with big changes at The Village Square and with new tenants moving in we had to take some of the decor pieces away. Me and Adriana had to carry a ball and claw couch from shop 3 to shop 7. Now this isn't far but damn it was heavy. I could feel the strain on my shoulders but I was like.. yeah this is a good workout. Then came Pilates that afternoon and we did those closed stretch bands and guess what area we targeted.. arms, shoulders and traps.. haha I was so stiff the next day but I'm thinking it was more the couch's fault. Simple things like moving the couch and picking some tomatoes (almost said veggies but if I remember correctly, it's a fruit.. that whole debate.. at least I know not to add a tomato to my next fruit salad) are what we were built to do, so we shouldn't stop doing it. You've all heard of the saying: If you don't use it, you lose it. And I've seen this. Clients that could do certain stretches perfectly in Stretching Class, all of a sudden can't after being away or sick for a while. We need to stay mobile and flexible. Keep moving and not just day to day stuff. Moooove every part of your body. Stretch each toe and reach for the sky every now and again. See if you can get that book off the top shelf without getting a stepping chair. Dropped something? Do a squat and pick it up. The longer we can keep moving like we used to when we were kids. The longer we will take to get old. At Namo we like to think that it stands for Natural Movement, which can mean many things but one of them is that we're designed to move and that's what we should be doing. In whatever shape or form. If you want to join a class to help increase your daily movement: www.namohealth.co.za/exercise-studio

  • A world of Alternatives

We live in a world that is full of alternatives and for whatever reason, you might come across one of these alternatives somewhere along the line... The good old days of following a recipe to the T is long gone for many of the clients I encounter coming into the health shop on a daily basis. Does gluten-intollerant, lactose-intollerant, sugar-free, vegan, allergen-free, vegetarian, low carb, low GI, keto friendly, banting friendly, high fibre, anti-inflammatory diet or diabetic friendly ring a bell? Maybe you've even heard of something not on this list, and you probably will because when you really get into 'alternatives', the list can go on forever. People have decided to eat a specific way for various different reasons, most of them are however health related. Whether the doctor told them to or their bodies just forced them to.. People now look for alternatives to swop out every day ingredients with. We get clients in the shop in all shapes and forms and we need to help each one customize their shopping basket to their specific needs. One might be gluten intolerant.. which is easy.. just give a gluten free flour.. but wait.. they are allergic to nuts.. so that cuts out almond flour, macadamia flour, pecan nut flour and in some extreme cases, even coconut flour. Fine.. that leaves us with flours like buckwheat, flax, tapioca, potato, rice, maize and chickpea, to name a few. Now they might mention that the homeopath suggested they follow a Paleo diet. This diet doesn't allow for any grains or legumes. This cuts out options like rice, buckwheat, millet and quinoa, as well as chickpea flour and any other kind of bean flour. You see where I'm going with this. Sometimes it's quite a puzzle to figure out which pieces fit that person's needs. It's not always as simple as a one size fits all kind of solution. I think our bodies are amazing but they can be fragile too. Like how weird is it that some people can eat anything and other have a list of allergies as long as the Eiffel Tower. I'm actually a good example of how fragile the body can be. One moment I'm perfect and then I eat an avocado, a mango, some grapes or a raw tomato or some green pepper or whatever other beautiful food my body feels in the mood to reject that day. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 aaaaand SNEEZE ATTACK! First I thought I might be allergic but come on.. there would be nothing for me left to eat.. or nothing healthy at least. I had this experience for as long as I can remember. In most cases I just ride it out but it got to a point that I thought enough is enough! I started experimenting with herbs and supplements and eventually landed on digestive enzymes. My blood group is A and A's have been known to have low stomach acid. This is what brought me to try Digestive Enzymes. I first used the Solgar brand.. horrible tasting tablets but they work like a bomb. I then switched to the Willoe brand and these are capsules which are a lot easier to swallow and work just as good. I would take one of these tablets, mid sneeze attack and before I'm able to count to 20, the sneezing stops. My husband says it's a placebo effect because nothing works that quick but in my case it does. I realized that I just have a lack of enzymes in my stomach to digest the food I'm eating. And just like that my 'allergy', is gone. Now I'm lucky that I just thought I had an allergy and didn't actually have an allergy. Some people have or develop serious food allergies. Nuts and peanuts are two very well known allergens. Milk and Gluten have made some headlines in recent years, some symptoms may be mild like bloating and flatulence while others' chests might start to close up when they ingest them. Diabetes is also a tricky one... you can almost see this as people being allergic to sugar. It's not that but they're not allowed to eat sugar so they could say they're allergic. In a health shop there are a lot of options for someone with diabetes. Many of the products are sugar free but they can't shop blind. Some products, although healthy, won't be good for a person with diabetes. Natural sweetneres like honey and dates can still spike their glucose levels so they need to shop for sugar free alternatives that don't give them that sugar high. Luckily in modern times, people are constantly coming up with new food. There are really great alternatives for milk (or lactose) and gluten on the market. Some products you won't even know that it's gluten free! You even get dairy free chocolates which are sooo yummy! Visit your nearest health shop and I'm sure they will have a great selection to choose from. A few tips: Don't try to make a gluten free white sauce with coconut flour.. yeah.. that was my amateur introduction to gluten free cooking..it didn't work. You get great blended gluten free flours which have a mix of different flours and xantham gum (already added). This means that you can take any normal recipe and swop our the flour directly with the gluten free flour. It works great. If you work with individual flours - make sure you get a recipe using that same flour. Some gluten free flours don't works for all recipes. Tapioca and flax flour absorb a lot more water than regular flour and coconut flour (like I had to learn the hard way) has zero elasticity or way to make a white sauce thicken. You get great recipes on Pinterest these days. You can swop an ingredient if you can't find it or if you don't like the taste but make sure it's got a similar texture. Like you could swop almond flour for sunflower flour - same texture but a lot cheaper. Earlier I wrote about different diets as well... banting, keto, blood group diet, atkins, paleo (to name a few) People go on diets like this for different reasons. Some do it to lose weight, others to improve their health, others to lower their risk of heart disease or diabetes, some to lower their levels of acidity - for whatever reason, if you decide to follow a sticy diet, there's probably a few things wou won't be allowed to eat. That's where the alternatives come in. Make sure you do research about the diet before starting so you can know what to stock your pantry up with before starting. It's the worst to look at all the food in the house and think it's off limits. Alternatives - it's a topic I could go on forever about but each person's needs are so specific. I can't just write a go to guide on alternative ingredients and everyone just copy and pastes it. The best is to see a health practitioner like a naturopath, homeopath or wellness coach so that they can do an extensive interview with you to get all the ins and outs of your body. Some even test on the spot for allergies and intollerances. Some might even go into what blood group you are and suggest some lifestyle changes according to that. The other way to do it is to just listen to your body. If you're not feeling great. Cut a few suspects out and then after a few weeks. Bring them back slowly and if you experience unpleasant symptoms shortly after reintroducing something - you know that's the culprit. Wheat, gluten, eggs, nuts, alchohol, sugar, caffeine and dairy are a few big ones to start with. And then lastly.. don't stress! If you find something that you realized was a trigger. Come to Namo and let one of us assist with finding the best alternative to replace it, so you can go back to living life to the fullest!

  • The cost of supplements

Health shops are sometimes believed to be expensive. This is not always the case. Recently we've taken on multiple luxury supplement ranges. Some imported and some local. And unfortunately - they're expensive. It's expensive to get quality ingredients. It's expensive to package the product in eco friendly containers. It's expensive to hire experts to help with the perfect formulation. It's expensive to do clinical trials on the products to test for the effectiveness and safety. It's expensive to source the active ingredients from nature instead of making it synthetically in a lab. It's expensive to make the product more bio available via liposomal technology or nano technology. You can get cheaper products at other retail stores but you have to compare apples with apples. Read your label and check what you're getting. Take Magnesium for example.. is it a powder, a sugar coated tablet, a natural tablet or a capsule? Is it Magnesium Citrate, Glycinate, Chloride, or Aspartate? What is the strength per capsule? All these answers can influence how much Magnesium your cells are actually getting at the end of the day. Now look there's always the back to nature concept which I love, going in your back yard, harvesting some fresh herbs and consuming them right there or like the well known Kankerbossie.. brewing a pot of tea will give you major benefits but there's just a few of these newly released supplements that's on a whole new level. My latest experience was with a B Complex, or more specifically, Good Health Products' Activated B Complex. It's a New Zealand brand of really well made supplements. The rep came to do some training on the range that we stocked and then introduced us to this new B Complex and I was like yeah but we already stock so many B Complexes... she then elaborated about the added Choline that was in this which is necessary for brain health and foetal development, amongst many other benefits. As well as that it's a lot more bio available than regular B Complexes. She said that 30min after you take a serving, you have more energy. She left us with a sample and we decided to do a little experiment. I had used B Complexes before but I was curious to see if this one would be any different. We decided to drink a capsule 30min before Pilates class so see if we get more energy. Halfway though class which is roughly an hour after we consumed it, we really started having so much energy. After class I was so happy and bubbly and first I thought it was the endorphins of the Pilates but it had a certain gen-e-se-qua this time. Where I'm normally in bed by 8pm, that night, I was up until just before midnight working on new business ideas and marketing concepts. Full of energy. It's safe to say now that I suggest taking it in the morning and not after 3 in the afternoon. Other benefit of these better quality supplements is that you can use less. You'll see that in most cases you only need one a day. This is music to my ears. When I read that I have to take 2 capsules, 3 times a day, I get over it before even starting. That would equal 6 capsules a day - of just that one product. Then I haven't even started with any of my other supplements. Now I know that the economy is tough and we can't all go around spending thousands on supplements each month. We gét a budget and I always say, taking something is better than nothing. Unfortunately our food doesn't have everything in that it's supposed to have in, so we need to supplement our diet. Come chat to us at Namo and explain to us your needs and your budget and we can help find you the best value. Bryant McGill said: Health is wealth. Invest while you can.

  • Stretching - but not the 'koeksister' type

Henk's Stretching classes are amazing! Safe for all ages and because he's a massage practitioner as well, he knows the body really well so he's able to give alternative exercises if your body is unable to do certain movements. The pattern of the class is always the same. Some might find this boring but I like that you can analyze your body from class to class. I could do this last week, why can't I do it this week!? Or, a month ago I couldn't touch my toes but now I can! It's a great way to see what kind of space your body is in on the day. By being consistently active, you can become conscious of problem areas in the body and pick up on them quicker than someone living a stationary life. It's also easier to fix the body with a quick massage or supplement when the body is in a fairly good state, rather than in a permanent state of distress. The class is a nice balance of stretching, strengthening, balance and breathing exercises. Right at the end of the class they do a few Chinese Health exercises which is lovely to get that extra boost of oxygen before taking on your day! There are 11 spots available in the class so make sure to book your mat. They have lovely thick mats in the Namo Studio which is so nice to exercise on without feeling like you're on the floor. Henk also incorporates a big and small exercise ball to do a few of the exercises which is always a great test of your core muscles and balance. The stretches and movements are quite classic. You're not going to end up being tangled up like a koeksister like in some yoga classes. The exercises are easy to follow - so there's no excuses not to do the class :) Be sure to book your spot in advance with Henk Liebenberg on WhatsApp: 082 684 5626 PS Classes start at 8am sharp and the duration is +- 30minutes - great way to start the day

  • Tai Chi - where East meets West

I'm sure you've seen a movie where elderly Japanese men and women do dance-like movements in the park... that's Tai Chi! They make it look super easy but in reality it's quite a brain teaser to learn those movements. In the beginning your hands might feel a little dumb, not knowing which way to go but once you get that lightbulb moment, it all starts to fit in place. In traditional Japanese training, you're never actually taught. You just join in and copy and copy and copy for what might feel like forever until they start to actually teach you what the movements are all about. In the West, this style of teaching hasn't had much success. Apparently we're too nosey.. like we have too many questions and we want to know why and how - about every move. This is why Henk, the instructor, has adapted his Yang style classes to a more Western approach. The 24 step form that you learn is still the core focus of the classes but the longer you're part of the class, you'll start to learn the techniques with input, in other words, you'll see why the move is done in the way that it's done. These types of movements will almost look like self defense, where you'll be grabbed and then by doing a simple technique, be able to come out of the situation. Doing the classic form is super relaxing. Practicing this in my mind and in person helped me through my anxiety. When you're doing Tai Chi, you're not thinking of anything else. It's a great way to start the morning with a variety of slow, harmonious movements and laser focus reactions. There's two classes to choose from, Beginners or Advanced, so anyone can join. Tai Chi is a form of martial art but it's soft, almost meditation-like and it's a wonderful tool to improve your brain function, hand/eye coordination, balance and mobility. The dance-like movements in the park isn't all that you learn in these classes though. Once you've learned the form you could practice it solo on the beach or in a beautiful forest to harmonize your body and mind. However, in class, you'll constantly learn more details and get in depth knowledge about each movement and then every now and again, come back to the basic form and practice that. I've been doing Tai Chi for a few years now and I still learn something new in each class. On weekends I enjoy going some solo Tai Chi on the deck, soaking up some sun or testing my self defense moves with my very unsuspecting husband when I tell him to hold my arm. Tai Chi has taught me a great sense of self awareness as well as mind-body focus and I think it's a great class to try. Just know that's it's not something you can just do a walk-in class for, you first have to learn from scratch - give it a month or two to really get into it - you'll see :) PS Remember to bring socks! For more info on the classes, WhatsApp Henk Liebenberg directly on 082 684 5626 and he can assist you with which class to start with.

  • Zumba - more than just a funny dance

Have you ever joined a Zumba Class? When you google Zumba, you'll probably see the photos of beautiful girls in crop tops doing a little dance, ever so elegantly, all facing the same way and doing the same move. This is however not always the case in real life. We're human and these classes were designed for humans, not robots. They're supposed to be fun and to put some rhythm in your step. The classes are made for everyone - no matter your age or body type. As long as you love to move and get fit - this is the class for you. These classes are a great way to help burn calories and lose weight. They even make that one song get stuck in your head for a few days after class - especially if you mastered the dance move that happens on that specific part of the song. It's a great feeling! Fair warning - the first class or two of three classes, your hands and feet will feel very dumb. Luckily the first class is for free - just to break the ice. You think you know which way is right and which way is left but these classes challenge more than just your body, it challenges your mind too. Ever wanted to go to brain camp or to improve your balance and coordination? Now's your chance. This class is a classic example of monkey see, monkey do. You basically just follow the leader. Whatever Lene', the instructor, does, you copy. You're probably worried now that you won't be able to keep up... Don't worry! It's a no-judgement zone and if you can't figure out the move, just keep moving and you'll catch the next one. You might think that everyone's watching you shake your booty but everyone's focusing so hard on what to do that no one is worried about what the person next to them is doing. Zumba is a mix of latin and modern music. Some of the songs are really catchy! Lene' designs a spesific routine for every song and once everyone's learned that song - she changes things up and adds new songs to keep things interesting. Zumba classes are fun to do with friends or to just get your daily cardio session in. Classes are roughly 45 to 50 minutes and you're likely to break a sweat in that time so remember to bring your water. There's no breaks in between songs but if you feel you need a time out you're more than welcome to take a break in between to gather your breath. Wear comfortable clothes that you can move freely in. Lene' makes the classes super fun! There's two classes a week and they're conveniently scheduled for after 5pm so that everyone can join after work. Get your heartrate up and get your blood pumping. You'll feel amazing afterwards. Who doesn't like Endorphins!? #happyhormones To book your spot, contact the instructor directly (on WhatsApp): Lene' Schutte 060 548 6581

  • Pilates - from couch potato to addict

In school I never used to be into sports or exercise - especially not the competitive kind. A couple of years ago, however, I discovered Pilates. It changed my life! Now I get withdrawal symptoms if I have to miss a class. At one point I was training 5 days a week and sometimes twice a day to catch up on classes. Pilates just resonated with me. It's not competitive and I love that! You work at your own pace and see the improvements within your body, week to week. Joseph Pilates has a famous quote: “In 10 sessions you will feel the difference, in 20 you will see the difference, and in 30 you’ll have a whole new body.” I heard this quote and decided to give it a chance and I definitely didn't stop at just 30 sessions. My body started to feel stronger and visibly looked more toned. I had more control over each muscle and exercises that I struggled with in the beginning became easier and easier. Even everyday activities became easier - like my body just coped better. I hardly ever run but the one day I went running with my husband and he loves running. We went up a hill and even though my lungs were burning (because I'm cardio-unfit), my legs seemed to be perfectly fine while my husband could go another 10km (fitness-wise) but his legs gave in half way up the hill. That's when I realized that the Pilates had strengthened my muscles. My first exposure to Pilates was a few years ago that I did one of Eileen's classes. She had a big ball class planned and warned me that it was quite advanced. I was the youngest one (by far) in the class and everyone seemed to be fine with the exercises while I on the other hand was suffering. My muscles were stiff for two solid weeks after that class. It's a proper workout. You feel muscles working that you didn't know you had. Eileen is BASI Qualified and she's a really good instructor. Her classes are on Tuesday and Thursday mornings (excluding Public Holidays and School Holidays). I joined Yolanda's Pilates classes more recently. I love that she changes her classes often. We use different equipment in each class - small balls, stretchy bands, gliders, rings, big balls, hand weights and sometimes no equipment to work with the body's own weight and resistance. She's been BASI qualified since 2017 (to be confirmed) and I love her teaching style, explaining the exercises with the breath and guiding you through core engagement. She's got a variety of classes for different fitness levels and at different time slots. We're also excited to launch weekend workshops with Yolanda. Do your body a favour and join a Pilates class - hopefully you'll become addicted too! • Ashwaganda - just because you can't pronounce it, doesn't mean you shouldn't use it

We've heard it all - every possible pronunciation of the herb called Ashwaganda. Just like some people come in asking for Frankenstein Oil, when they actually mean Frankincense Oil, we’ve gotten pretty good at deciphering weird names given to herbs and other complimentary medicines. When I finally manage to figure out that a client is looking for Ashwaganda -1 get so happy! I probably can't say that it's my favourite herb because otherwise you'd know I'm cheating. If I'm not careful, each blog post will start like that, because they all feel like my favourites. I just love herbs! Ashwaganda however is really high up on my list. Ashwaganda has a lot of benefits including: •Immune Boosting •Balancing Thyroid hormones •Reducing brain cell degeneration and thereby increase memory function •Increasing fertility and sexual health •Boosting muscle strength (even better if combined with a good workout) •Balancing Blood Sugar Like the list above isn't great enough, that’s not actually what this post is about Today I would like to focus on all the herb's benefits for the nervous system - specifically. How many of you feel happy? Truly happy? I once read in a book that no happy person has to stand in front of a mirror and repeat to themselves that they are happy - you just are! We find that many people in todays crazy, upside down, fast paced, ever changing new world that we live in, struggle to keep it all together. So many of our clients say that they struggle (however mildly, or serious) with feelings of depression, anxiety and just stress. Remember, everyone feels stressed. You can sometimes look at someone who seems like they have it all but I bet you - they feel stress - in their own way. No one can judge and say that one person has more stress than someone else. The way we experience stress is different for everyone. Someone fighting a war thousands of kilometers from home might be the same level of stressed as a girl who can't find the right colour dress for prom. That might be the most stressful event in both individuals fives. The trick is, how do we manage that stress? Herbs like Ashwaganda, Rhodiola. Ginseng and Astragalus are all Adaptogens. The simplest way to explain what an Adaptogen is, is that it helps you to adapt to change. Whether it's moving to a new town, getting into or out of a relationship, new job, dealing with the death of a loved one or raising kids (they're ever changing). As our environment changes, our body goes into a state of shock - it doesn't like change. Some people take only a few seconds to get over it and move on, others get stuck and their nervous systems never recover. When we stress our bodies release a hormone called CortisoL This is also known as the stress hormone. Ashwaganda helps lower your Cortisol levels to help you not always be ON. In order for your body to wake up in the morning it releases Cortisol to counter the Melatonin which helps you stay asleep. Now imagine your body keeps getting little does of wake-me-up- juice - it just never switches off! This can lead to insomnia and from there anxiety during the day as well. Although Ashwaganda is great for treating stress and anxiety, I wouldn’t suggest Ashwaganda as a sleep tonic. I heard a few clients used it at night, some slept like logs and others were wide awake. I know it lowers the Cortisol levels but what you might not know is that another benefit is that it increases endurance and stamina - in other words, your energy levels. Thus, Ashwaganda is great to use in the mornings - before work or your Pilâtes session (also note that muscle strength benefit mentioned earlier). It will help you deal with any surprises that you might encounter during the day. It will help you cope better with stressful situations and make you feel calmer during anxious periods. Then another benefit of Ashwaganda is that it helps people that feel depressed. It increases their mood, takes away the brain fog and gives them the energy boost they need to get through the day. Most people with depression feel overwhelmed - it either makes them feel depressed, or anxious - in some cases - both. Ashwaganda is great with helping these individuals cope. Also, people with Adrenal Fatigue., you know that feeling of burnout or just plain 'gatvol' - after a long day or a long season at work (we all know that Christmas time rush) or even after dealing with a very traumatic or stressful event (think lawyers or police)», this is a great time to dose your body with adaptogens like Ashwaganda. The best would be actually be to start taking it before these stressful times, but that isn't always possible. To sum up: I think we can all do with a dose of Ashwaganda now and then. It just makes life so much easier. It helps you get over the speed bumps a little quicker and makes 'adulting' a little more bearable. You get Ashwaganda in many different forms - Capsules, Tincture or Powder - choose the one that's going to be the least stressful for you to take. We all know which one will fit best into our busy lifestyles. Shop here: https://www.namohealth.co.za/search-results?q=ashwaganda

  • Read this before your next period

When I started this blog I decided to be 100% open and honest. I didn't want to shy away from awkward topics or worry what people were going to think. Sometimes health and wellness is raw and messy - but that's life. We have to go through the bad to appreciate the good. Today I feel that I need to write about something that happened to me that I want to share with all the ladies I know (and don't know) because trust me.. you need to hear this story! For those of you that know me will know that I get my periods bad. Now when I say bad I mean booked off, in bed, on pain pills for at least a day or two. Normally day one and two is the worst. Heavy flow plus extreme pain. I had better ones and worse ones but never what I considered as just normal where you can go about your day and do normal stuff with some discomfort and irritability. I tried herbs like feverfew and willow and they did help but nothing like the effects of Nerofen Period Pain Tablets. Unfortunately that was all that worked for me. The problem is one's body doesn't like pain pills. It's very toxic to your liver and you can't afford to be on them the whole time. Then there's the hormone-herbs like chaste tree and black cohosh.. I've used a few of these in the past as well and they definitely helped a lot with my mood and pms. That I can say for sure but they didn't make the heavy cramps and pain go away.. those types of herbs also helped me be nice and regular which is always a bonus but I was getting fed up of planning my whole life around my period. I've missed wedding, birthdays, and pretty much every other fun event you can imagine due to my cramps. I remember for three years in a row I had my period on Chritmas day and instead of spending it with family and friends I spent the majority of those special days in bed. Now why am I telling you all of this... Something amazing happened! A miracle! I decided early in November to spoil myself with some new supplements that I hadn't used in a while. I wanted to go for NAC and FemiScript but then my colleague Yolanda told me how well a product called Hormone Assist helped her daughter. I checked it out and saw that it had NAC in so I decided to leave the NAC and FemiScript and go for the Hormone Assist.. then I only need to drink one capsule instead of taking two different ones. Unfortunately I wasn't really saving on cash, just on effort as the Hormone Assist was costing more than the other two combined but I decided: "Heck, I'm worth it and if it worked so well for her maybe it will help for me too." Maybe what convinced me was that Yolanda said that it might help me loose weight as well because it helps balance the hormones and fights estrogen dominace - something that I have suspected is causing a lot of my issues. Being on month two of a new weight loss journey I was keen to try anything that might help me less the kilos. Anyways.. so I started using them. Two capsules a day. This was about a week before my period was due to start. Oh by the way girls.. awesome app called My Calender is a period tracker - love it! And so a few days after using it.. my period started on Saturday morning. It started light.. like it sometimes does - then you know day two is going to be horrible. Luckily I didn't feel any cramps that day because it was my turn to work on the weekend. I thought to myself: "Luckily it started now so I can sleep it off on Sunday." Sunday came and my flow confirmed that I was definitely on my period (not just a false alarm like some spotting sometimes gives us) but something was different. I didn't have any cramps. Like nothing. Day three still nothing. It was the weirdest feeling ever! I literally had to check every now and again just to be sure it was still happening because the feeling of nothingness was just so strange to me. Is this was normal feels like? Is this how "normal" girls experience their period? So my period ended on day 6 and to my amazement I didn't have one cramp during the whole process.. like not just mild cramps that I didn't need pain pills.. like zero cramps! When I woke up on Sunday with no cramps I thought I had to take advantage of this opportunity so my fiance and I went on a 15km hike. Not bad for day two... Girls.. can I tell you.. this experience has been the most freeing thing ever! To think I can actually go on my with normal life and day to day activities without having to make excuses for my uterus is the best thing that has ever happened to me. The Hormone Assist Capsules are pricey but I would pay it two times over each month if it meant that I can have a normal or even better than normal period like in November. The weirdest thing is that the ingredients in this blend by Future Health isn't the conventional Hormone balancing herbs.. it's a really interesting combination of ingredients - all natural and all mighty. I'm super impressed. Fingers crossed for the next one! I'm on one capsule a day for now. I'm going to up it to two a few days before I start again. Basically what I experienced was a lighter flow, no nausea, no paleness, no cramps or pain, less moodiness (or at least what I could tell), no need for a pain pill, no need for a hot water bottle or a few more hours in bed, no need for a back rub (or no need more more usual) and since then weight loss - especially around my middel. Regarding the weight loss, I should just mention that I do pilates twice a week, watch what I eat and drink lots of green tea like my friend Beandri advised me to do. Something about that combo along with what a believe is miracle Hormone pills has helped me lose plenty kilos so far. I'm just so amazed by this products and even Dr Redelinghuys was surprised today when I told her that I had such amazing results after a week - normally natural supplements take longer period of time to start working. I just hope that those of you that suffer with endometriosis, PCOS, dysmenorrhea or any other hormone related issues will try these capsules and see if it makes as much of a difference for you than it has for me. Invest in your health and invest in yourself. You deserve to have normal as well... • Sugar Free September Challenge

The Namo Team would like to challenge everyone to go sugar free for the month of September! You might have seen some activity on our social media pages about us going sugar-free for the month of September and I don't know how many of you have joined us but I thought i'd give an update of how it's been going so far. It's hard! We have to be honest - even for us that are health conscious and generally eat very healthy and clean - this challenge has been really difficult. There's sugar in everything and let me tell you, once you eat a little bit your body just craves more and more and more. It's like that one little bite wakes the dragon and then there's like a cookie monster inside you just asking for more. Some of us have even taken it a few steps further trying to lower our carb intake, lessen processed foods, exercise more and watch our calories. We've been doing good - it's much easier when you have a supportive team. However, there's always temptations luring around every corner. I remember in that first week we started we had so many social gathering invites and not even to speak about the Covid dangers - we just thought of all the junk food, snacks, alcohol and sugary drinks that comes with a social event. You have to listen to your own body and know what your limitations are. Some of us went cold turkey while others gradually lowered their sugar intake. There's no right or wrong way of doing it. I always just say that if you can become 1% better very day then it means you are 100% better than you were 100 days later. They say it takes 21 days to form a habit and I must say it's true. Tomorrow is the 21st day of the challenge and I can already feel how much easier my healthy habits are - they come naturally now. I have just decided to give myself one relaxed day per week so normally on a Saturday we tend to overindulge a bit more - now I allow myself to indulge but I still try and keep it healthy. So I might for example eat double the amount of calories than normal but then on Sunday I'm back to normal again. I guess this is why they call it a challenge because it is super challenging for mind and body. The only advise I can give is to keep your focus. Henk once said during a Tai Chi Class; "Your focus will determine your success." As long as your mind is focused on healthier habits - your success will follow.

  • Beach Clean Up

I don't know if it's just me, but instead of pickup up shells on the beach, I pick up trash. I just love it and you still get to admire the pretty shells along the way. Other bonuses are getting some sun, fresh air and exercise - all which does wonders for the soul and for my stress levels. By filling a bag with plastic, glass pieces and an assortment of other trash that was not disposed of correctly, gives me a sense of accomplishment and a rush of Dopamine which is one of your happy hormones. This is my feel good hormones and I love to up these jolly little hormones over the weekends. I feel like in today's Covid 19 craziness we forget about all the other issues that humankind and the planet is faced with.. Plastic pollution - especially in the ocean is a serious issue and I know my one bag of trash every now and again isn't going to save the world but I hope to at least save something.. hopefully one less bird or fish will get affected by a rouge piece of plastic. It's actually kinda fun.. I like to make a game of it.. try to see how much j can collect in the least amount of time and like with my last beach visit I actually sat on one place and just picked up little bits of plastic around me... it wasn't as much exercise as I normally get by walking up and down the coast line and getting in my steps (and squats), but it really gave me a scare. I don't know if you've heard of nurdles but nurdles are little round plastic balls that they use to make plastic products (they melt it down and mold it from there). A few months or gosh, it could even be years ago.. the time goes so quickly.. a ship carrying tons of these nurdles tipped and millions of these little nurdles landed in the ocean. To this day they are still washing up on shore and that's how I spent my Sunday afternoon - picking up nurdles on one of Stilbaai's beautiful beaches. I would like to encourage as much people as possible to follow my example and go to the beach every now and then and pick up a few pieces of plastic.. even if it's just one or two. Get the kids involved and see how much they can collect in an afternoon.
